Quonset Buildings
- Base building: $12-25/sq ft
- Accessories: +15%
- Foundation: $5-10/sq ft
- Construction Cost: $5-10/sq ft
Steel buildings cost anywhere from $12-$25 per sq ft for the building kit components. Prices vary depending upon building location, building specifications, and optional upgrades.
Square foot prices reduce as the overall building size increases (see table below).
Another factor that will keep the price down is if you choose standard size buildings such as: 30’x40′, 60’x40′, 50’x80′, 50’x50′ 60’x100′, 80’x100′ etc. (as opposed to irregular sizes 33’x47′ etc.)
Building Size (ft) | Square Footage (SF) | Estimate Cost | Cost / Square Foot |
---|---|---|---|
30x40 | 1,200 | $15,000 | $12.50 |
30x60 | 1,800 | $22,500 | $12.50 |
40x60 | 2,400 | $24,500 | $12.50 |
50x50 | 2,500 | $25,600 | $10.25 |
50x80 | 4,000 | $41,000 | $10.25 |
50x100 | 5,000 | $45,500 | $9.10 |
60x100 | 6,000 | $54,600 | $9.10 |
80x100 | 8,000 | $73,000 | $9.10 |
100x100 | 10,000 | $91,000 | $9.10 |
100x200 | 20,000 | $182,000 | $9.10 |
150x250 | 37,500 | $341,250 | $9.10 |

When considering the square foot (SF, sq ft) cost of a steel building, you should take a few different factors into consideration.
First of all, you will need to choose the style of building preferred. Straight walled or rigid frame buildings are very popular, can be finished with masonry, brick or stucco on the exterior walls (if desired) and are extremely sturdy and strong. Materials for an average-sized, residential steel building can range $9 per square foot for large buildings such as a 80x100 building and go up to $12/sq ft for a small 30x40 building. These prices are for the building shell. You will need to account for accessories (including doors and windows) as well as a delivery charge and labor costs to construct the building. If you added 10-30% for accessories and 5-10% for delivery, you will have a fairly accurate cost before installation. Building the steel structure yourself will eliminate labor costs entirely. Remember that buildings with a larger finished size cost less per square foot than smaller or average sized buildings. Labor costs can run $5-10/sq ft.
Quonset Hut (or arch buildings) structures are another choice in prefab buildings. They have arched roofs and are also durable, exceptionally strong (even more so than straight walled buildings due to added stability of the arch) and easily assembled. Quonsets cost less for materials and will start from $8/sq ft before accessories, delivery and labor.
Also consider the location of the building and whether a foundation and a floor will need to be laid to complete the installation. This can add from $5 to $10 per square foot to the cost for either style of metal building.
Therefore, we can summarize the total cost of a steel building project as follows:

NOTE: With smaller buildings (less than 5,000SF) you could easily save the $5-10/ sq ft construction cost if you self-build. These buildings are shipped with all necessary hardware and detailed erection instructions. For larger buildings this saving could easily equate to between $20,000-$50,000.
